Diwali Caravan Trip India 2026: Camping, Routes and What It Actually Costs

Every Diwali plan runs into the same wall, and it is not the tickets. It is the bed. By late September the rooms in Jaipur, Udaipur, Coorg and every hill station within reach of a metro are gone, and what is left is priced for people who had no choice.

A caravan holiday sidesteps that, because you bring the bed with you. Diwali 2026 runs from Friday 6 November to Tuesday 10 November, with Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November. The main day falling on a Sunday is the whole story: two leave days buy you a six day window, which is why festival week inventory disappears earlier than usual this year.

What you actually get on Diwali night is different from the hotel version of the same trip. You park at a campsite, farm stay or lakeside halt, put the awning out, draw rangoli on the ground at the caravan door, line diyas along the pitch, and do the puja outside your own vehicle instead of in a corridor.

This guide covers the national picture: how the format works during festival week, where caravans actually park, what it costs at real published rates, and when to book. Every BookMyCaravan trip runs with a professional driver, so nobody in your group spends Diwali behind a steering wheel.

Key Takeaways

  • Diwali 2026: Dhanteras 6 Nov, Chhoti Diwali 7 Nov, Lakshmi Puja 8 Nov, Govardhan Puja 9 Nov, Bhai Dooj 10 Nov. The main day is a Sunday.
  • A Diwali caravan trip is a camping holiday, not a hotel substitute. You sleep at campsites, farm stays and resort grounds, and each halt is booked separately.
  • Caravan rental on BookMyCaravan runs from ₹10,000 a night for an entry unit, ₹15,000 to ₹19,500 for a premium caravan and ₹25,000 to ₹35,000 for a luxury motorhome. Priced per unit, not per person.
  • Most units carry an onboard genset, so lights and overnight air conditioning work at a halt with no hookup. Running it is billed by the hour on most fleets, so settle the rate at quotation.
  • Every booking is chauffeur driven. You choose the route and book the halts. You never drive.
  • Indian Railways opens general quota booking 60 days ahead, so Diwali week opens between 7 and 11 September 2026 and the popular routes clear fast.
  • Book the caravan by late September and the camping halts by early October.

What Makes a Diwali Caravan Holiday Different

I have spent Diwali both ways, and the gap was not the one I expected. I assumed it would come down to the room. It comes down to where you are at 7pm on the main night.

One year that was a hotel lobby in a fort town with the luggage still in the car and two kids past their limit. The next year it was a farm ground outside the same town, already parked, awning out, nothing left to do but light the diyas. Most Diwali travel content sends you to a city and tells you to book a hotel in it. This is a different shape of holiday, and during festival week the difference gets bigger rather than smaller.

You camp on Diwali night instead of checking in. On 8 November you are not queueing at a front desk at 7pm with a car full of luggage. You are parked, the camp chairs are down, and the only job left is lighting the diyas.

The setup is yours, not the property’s. Hotels do a lobby rangoli and hand you two diyas. Here the rangoli goes straight on the ground beside the caravan door, the diyas line the pitch edge and fairy lights run along the awning rail. It photographs better than any hotel balcony, and it is actually your celebration.

The group stays in one place. A family of six in a hotel is two or three rooms on different floors. In a four to six berth caravan it is one space, which during a festival is the entire point.

You get three Diwalis instead of one. Move each morning and Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali and Lakshmi Puja happen in three different places. A hotel trip locks you into whichever town you booked.

Crackers get actual space. City Diwali means fireworks in a lane between parked cars. At a campsite you have open ground and distance from the vehicle. Keep well clear of the caravan, the genset exhaust and the fuel side, and check that the property allows them.

Power does not depend on where you stop. Most units carry an onboard genset, so overnight air conditioning, charging and string lights run at a halt with nothing around it. This is what separates caravan camping in India from tent camping. Worth knowing before you plan around it: on most fleets the generator is an excluded item billed by the hour rather than something folded into the nightly rate, and the rate varies by unit, so get it in writing at quotation.

The elderly travel well. Own bed, own bathroom, no stairs, no unfamiliar hotel room at midnight. Multi generation Diwali trips are the single most common reason people move up to the luxury motorhome tier.

Dogs get out of the city. Fireworks and dogs are a rough combination, and a quiet campsite is kinder than a city lane on 8 November. Several units in the fleet take pets, though not all of them do and the terms differ, so confirm it for the specific caravan when you book. There is more in the guide to travelling with your dog.

Diwali Trains and Flights: The Problem Nobody Plans For

Most Diwali travel guides skip this entirely. Even if you find a room, you still have to get there, and during festival week that is the harder half.

Trains. Indian Railways reduced the advance reservation period to 60 days, excluding the date of journey, with effect from 1 November 2024. For Diwali 2026 that puts the booking mornings here.

Travel date Booking opens What happens on popular routes
Fri 6 Nov (Dhanteras) Mon 7 Sep, 8:00 AM Confirmed berths on metro to home town routes clear within minutes
Sat 7 Nov (Chhoti Diwali) Tue 8 Sep, 8:00 AM Heaviest outbound day of the week
Sun 8 Nov (Lakshmi Puja) Wed 9 Sep, 8:00 AM Waitlists open in double digits almost immediately
Mon 9 Nov (Govardhan Puja) Thu 10 Sep, 8:00 AM Slightly easier outbound, harder inbound
Tue 10 Nov (Bhai Dooj) Fri 11 Sep, 8:00 AM Return rush builds through the day

Two rule changes make those mornings tighter than they used to be. Tatkal booking on the IRCTC website and app is now restricted to Aadhaar authenticated users, and since 1 October 2025 the first 15 minutes of general reservation opening is Aadhaar authenticated users only on the website and app. On a Diwali route, 15 minutes is the whole game. Booking timings at computerised reservation counters were not changed, so a station counter is still open to you in that window if your IRCTC account is not linked.

Flights. The cheap fare buckets on metro to tier two routes are gone roughly eight weeks out for festival week. What is left from October is the top of the fare ladder, and a family of five books five of them. Then you land and still need a cab, a room and a way to reach the next town.

Why this matters for the caravan maths. A caravan booking has no quota, no waitlist, no 8:00 AM scramble and no per person multiplier. One booking covers the vehicle, the driver and the sleeping space for the whole group across every stop on the route.

Straight up though, this is not the right call for every trip. If you are flying 1,500 km to one city to stay with family for five days, fly, and book in September. The caravan format wins when you are travelling as a group, moving between two or three places, and you want the stay and the transport to be the same booking.

Diwali Caravan Camping: Where You Actually Park

This is the part people underestimate, and during Diwali week it decides whether the trip works. India has no national caravan park network. There is no chain of serviced pitches you can roll into. Caravan camping here runs through four types of halt, and every one of them needs booking ahead during festival week.

Halt type What you get Diwali week notes
Campsites and glamping properties Level ground, washrooms, often a kitchen and a bonfire pit The best fit for Diwali night. Book by early October, they fill alongside hotels.
Resort and hotel grounds Parking on property, access to pool and restaurant, security Useful when part of the group wants a room and part wants the caravan
Farm stays and private land Quiet, open space, room for crackers, usually the cheapest halt Best for Lakshmi Puja night. Least crowded option on 8 November.
Permitted parking near attractions Convenience, minimal facilities Fine for a daytime break. Not a Diwali night plan.

What a caravan camping night actually involves: park in daylight, awning out, camp chairs and table down, genset on if you need power. The caravan has its own toilet and shower, so a halt with no facilities still works. Cook on the onboard kitchen or eat at the property. Diyas and rangoli outside. Crackers on open ground away from the vehicle. Sleep in a proper bed with the air conditioning running. Next morning you are already where you wanted to be, which is the actual luxury of this format.

Full detail on how halts get arranged sits in the caravan overnight parking guide. Two constraints to build the itinerary around:

  1. Most trips start in the morning, and the caravan is not driven through the night. Departure times vary by operator and route, so confirm yours at booking. Either way, the plan where you finish Lakshmi Puja at 11pm and set off is not a plan. Be parked before evening on 8 November.
  2. The driver drives but does not plan your trip. You choose the route and book the halts. If you have not pre booked one, the driver can often help arrange something, but the itinerary is yours.

When Diwali 2026 Falls and How Many Nights to Book

Lakshmi Puja lands on Sunday 8 November, so the weekend does half the work.

Day Date Festival Caravan read
Day 1 Fri 6 Nov Dhanteras Good pickup morning if you take one leave day
Day 2 Sat 7 Nov Chhoti Diwali Peak outbound traffic. Main Diwali day across much of South India.
Day 3 Sun 8 Nov Diwali, Lakshmi Puja Be parked at your camping halt before evening
Day 4 Mon 9 Nov Govardhan Puja, Bestu Varas in Gujarat Roads open up. Best driving day of the week.
Day 5 Tue 10 Nov Bhai Dooj Return traffic builds through the day

Nights to book. With zero leave days, Saturday to Tuesday gives you three nights: two camping halts and a drop back. With two leave days on 5 and 6 November, Thursday to Tuesday gives you five nights, which is the sweet spot for a three stop route. Add 11 November for six nights and a calm return leg after the rush clears.

Three nights is the minimum for a caravan trip to make sense. Under that you spend the holiday on highways.

Diwali Caravan Trips by Pickup City

A caravan trip starts where you are, not where the listicle sends you. BookMyCaravan currently lists 51 caravans across 11 cities, and the seven hubs below are the ones with a dedicated city page and the deepest choice during festival week.

Pickup city Diwali week direction The caravan case for this hub Nights
Ahmedabad Kutch, Saurashtra coast, Statue of Unity, Saputara The strongest Diwali base in the country. Gujarat runs the festival straight into Bestu Varas, the corridors west stay drivable, and desert camping halts are plentiful. 3 to 5
Mumbai Konkan coast, Sahyadri ghats Coastal Diwali rather than hill Diwali. Konkan beach and farm halts are the emptiest inventory in the west that week. 3 to 5
Delhi Rishikesh, Corbett, Garhwal foothills Riverside camping plus altitude. Being in the foothills on 9 and 10 November rather than back in the plains is the whole reason to book, and the largest single city fleet makes late choice easier. 4 to 6
Jaipur Pushkar, Ranthambore, Shekhawati The postcard Diwali, priced like it. Camp outside the fort towns, drive in for the lit evenings, skip festival week room rates. 3 to 4
Pune Tapola, Mahabaleshwar, Konkan Least highway time of any hub. The pick if you only have Saturday to Tuesday. 2 to 4
Bangalore Coorg, Chikmagalur, Hampi Coffee estate camping, and the South marks the main day on 7 November, which quietly extends the usable window. Only two units here, so book earliest of any hub. 3 to 5
Hyderabad Nagarjuna Sagar, Srisailam, Gandikota Underrated purely because so few people plan out of it. Low festival week pressure and good open camping ground. 3 to 4

Caravans also run from Kolhapur, Aurangabad, Coimbatore and Visakhapatnam, though those hubs hold a single unit each, so festival week needs a lot more notice. The full locations list has the current picture, and the whole fleet is on the our fleet page. A night by night route breakdown is coming as a separate guide. This one is the national picture.

Caravan Destinations by State

These are the states we can put a caravan into from a pickup hub with fleet on the ground, which during festival week matters more than a wish list does.

The destinations hub covers the rest of the country, including states we can reach on a longer route out of Delhi or Mumbai but do not base caravans in.

Which Caravan Tier to Book for Diwali

Tier Nightly range Berths Best for Diwali week
Campervan and standard From ₹10,000 2 to 4 Couples and small families, two halts close to the pickup hub
Premium caravan ₹15,000 to ₹19,500 4 to 6 The default festive week booking. Families of four to six on a three to five night route.
Luxury motorhome ₹25,000 to ₹35,000 4 to 6 Multi generation Diwali trips, grandparents on board, the year’s main holiday

Rates are per unit, not per person. A family of six pays the same nightly rate as a couple, which is why the format gets stronger as the group gets bigger. Individual units vary within these bands, and camping halt fees, generator running, tolls, parking and state taxes are billed separately at actuals. Live pricing sits on each listing on the fleet page, and the motorhome rental guide covers the mid tier in more depth.

For Diwali specifically, book a tier up from what you think you need. Festival week means more luggage, more people joining at the last minute, and a lot of sweets boxes.

Doing Lakshmi Puja on a Caravan Trip

This is the question that stops most families booking at all. The assumption is that travelling during Diwali means skipping the festival. True in a hotel room. Not true at a camping halt.

Do the puja outside at your halt on the evening of 8 November. Lakeside, campsite, farm ground. Setup takes ten minutes.

Carry the kit from home. Puja thali, roli, akshat, a small Lakshmi Ganesh idol or photo, incense, sweets and rangoli colours. Rangoli on the ground at the caravan door looks better than it ever does on hotel tiles.

Clay diyas outdoors, well clear of the vehicle and the genset exhaust. LED diyas and fairy lights inside the caravan and along the awning. An open flame inside a vehicle is not worth the argument.

Be parked before evening. Trips generally start in the morning and the caravan is not driven overnight, so build the day around arriving early rather than pushing on.

Govardhan Puja on 9 November and Bhai Dooj on 10 November both travel fine. If family is joining for Bhai Dooj, plan the last halt within reach of them. And if the point of the trip is a quieter Diwali than the city version, say that to the group before booking. Half the friction on festive trips comes from two people wanting two different Diwalis.

What a Diwali Caravan Trip Costs

Your route and group size decide most of it, so here is the structure rather than a fake total.

Cost line Hotel led Diwali trip Diwali caravan trip
Accommodation Per room, per night, at festival week rates. Two rooms for a family of five. Three and four night minimums are common. One nightly rate for the whole unit, from ₹10,000. Group size does not multiply it.
Intercity transport Separate. Cab, rental or flights between stops. Included. The caravan is the transport.
Driver Separate, or you drive tired. Included. Chauffeur driven on every booking.
Multi stop overhead New booking, check in and deposit at each stop. One booking covers the whole route.
Festival surcharge Applies at nearly every property in a festival city. No per room spike, because there are no rooms.
Camping halts Not applicable. Campsite or farm stay fees per night, booked separately.
Extras Meals, parking, resort surcharges. Generator running billed on actual usage, plus tolls, parking and state taxes at actuals.

The point is not that a caravan is the low cost option. At the luxury end it is comfortably the more expensive way to spend the week. It is that during Diwali the hotel route quietly stops being the comfortable one: rooms are scarce, rates are up, and you are managing three bookings across five days. One booking, one vehicle, one operator is a cleaner week. Year round detail sits in the caravan rental cost breakdown.

When to Book a Caravan for Diwali 2026

Timeline What to lock Status if you miss it
10 to 12 weeks out (mid August) Dates, pickup city, tier Ideal. Full choice of units.
6 to 8 weeks out (late September) Caravan confirmed and held The real deadline. Premium still available.
4 weeks out (early October) Camping halts and campsite bookings Workable, but tier choice narrows and good halts fill.
2 weeks out (late October) Anything Difficult. Limited units, leftover halts.
Diwali week itself Nothing Not realistic for a multi night route.

Payment, deposit and cancellation terms are set out in your written quotation and on the frequently asked questions page, so read them before you pay rather than after. Booking in September and adjusting the route in October beats waiting for certainty and finding nothing. The step by step booking guide walks through the whole process.

How to Plan a Diwali Caravan Trip Step by Step

  1. Decide your nights. Two leave days or three. Everything follows from that.
  2. Pick the pickup hub, not the destination. Trip quality during festival week is decided by highway pressure, which is a function of where you start.
  3. Decide where you want to be camped on the night of 8 November. This is the anchor. Work backwards and forwards from it.
  4. Lock the caravan. Tier, dates, group size, in September.
  5. Book your camping halts. Campsites, farm stays, resort grounds, individually and in advance, by early October.
  6. Pack the puja kit first. It is the thing everyone forgets and the only thing you cannot buy on Diwali evening in a small town.

Mistakes to Avoid on a Diwali Caravan Trip

  • Booking in October. Festival week inventory does not behave like a normal weekend.
  • Treating it as a hotel trip with a vehicle. It is a camping holiday. Plan the halts with the same care you would plan the route.
  • Turning up at a campsite without a booking on 8 November. Not a strategy. I have tried it, on a festival weekend, and spent an hour on the phone while everyone else made chai.
  • Planning to travel on Diwali night. The caravan is not driven overnight, so the late departure you are imagining does not exist.
  • Assuming the driver is a trip planner. They drive and they know the roads. Your stops, your halt bookings, your call.
  • Crackers near the caravan. I have watched someone set off an anaar about four feet from a parked unit, on the fuel side, because it was the flattest bit of ground. Distance from the vehicle, the genset exhaust and the fuel side. Obvious at 10am, forgotten at 10pm.
  • Assuming the genset is free. It is usually an hourly charge on top of the nightly rate. If you are planning a no facility halt with the air conditioning running all night, ask for the rate in writing before you book.
  • Ignoring the return leg. Especially out of Delhi, where post Diwali air quality in the plains is a planning input rather than a footnote. The Central Pollution Control Board publishes the daily national index if you want to time the drive back.
  • Overloading the route. Four stops in five days during festival traffic means you spend Diwali on a highway. Two or three is the ceiling.

Diwali Caravan Packing List

Puja and festival. Puja thali, roli, akshat, kalava. A small Lakshmi Ganesh idol or framed photo. Incense, camphor, lighter. Clay diyas, oil or ghee, wicks. LED diyas and battery fairy lights for the caravan and awning. Rangoli colours or a stencil. Mithai and dry fruit, plus spare boxes for people you meet.

Camping. Torches and headlamps. Extra camp chairs if your group is over four. A bucket of water or a fire extinguisher on cracker night. Rubbish bags, because festival waste adds up and campsites remember who leaves a mess.

Practical. A warm layer for early November evenings, especially north of Jaipur. A power bank, because everyone is on video calls that week. Cash, because small town ATMs run dry across the festival block. First aid including burn ointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Diwali caravan trip

A Diwali caravan trip is a multi day camping holiday in a chauffeur driven caravan or motorhome over the Diwali festival week, where you sleep at campsites, farm stays and resort grounds rather than in hotels. You carry your sleeping space, bathroom and kitchen with you, perform Lakshmi Puja at your camping halt, and move to a new location each morning. Caravan rental on BookMyCaravan starts at ₹10,000 a night for the whole unit.

When is Diwali in 2026

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, the Lakshmi Puja night. The five day festival runs from Friday 6 November (Dhanteras) through Tuesday 10 November (Bhai Dooj). Because the main day is a Sunday, two leave days on 5 and 6 November create a six day caravan window.

Where do caravans camp overnight during Diwali in India

At campsites, glamping properties, farm stays, resort grounds and permitted parking spots, each booked individually. India has no national caravan park network, so halts are arranged in advance, and this matters more during Diwali week than any other time of year because campsite capacity fills alongside hotel capacity. Farm stays are usually the quietest option for Lakshmi Puja night.

Is a caravan holiday a good idea for Diwali

It works well during Diwali week specifically, because accommodation is the scarce resource that week rather than transport. A caravan carries the sleeping space with you, covers intercity travel in the same booking, includes a professional driver, and lets a group of six stay in one space instead of three hotel rooms on different floors. It is a weaker choice if you are making one long journey to a single city, where flying and booking early is simpler.

Can I perform Lakshmi Puja on a caravan trip

Yes. Set up outside the caravan at your camping halt on the evening of 8 November. Carry a puja thali, a small Lakshmi Ganesh idol, incense, sweets and rangoli colours from home. Draw the rangoli on the ground at the caravan door, use clay diyas outdoors well clear of the vehicle and generator exhaust, and keep LED diyas for inside. Be parked before evening, because trips generally start in the morning and the caravan is not driven overnight.

Can you burst crackers at a caravan camping halt

On open ground at a campsite or farm stay, yes, provided the property permits it and you keep well clear of the caravan, the generator exhaust and the fuel side. Campsites generally give you far more space than a city lane does. Keep water or an extinguisher to hand, check the property’s rules when you book the halt, and follow whatever local restrictions apply on the night.

How much does a caravan cost for a Diwali holiday in India

Caravan rental starts at ₹10,000 a night for a campervan or standard unit, ₹15,000 to ₹19,500 a night for a premium caravan, and ₹25,000 to ₹35,000 a night for a luxury motorhome. Rates are per unit, not per person, so a family of six pays the same nightly rate as a couple. Camping halt fees, generator running, tolls, parking and state taxes are billed separately at actuals, and individual units vary within those bands.

When should I book a caravan for Diwali 2026

Late September for the 6 to 10 November window, which is six to eight weeks ahead. Camping halts should be locked by early October, since campsites fill at the same rate hotels do. Booking earlier gives you a real choice of tier and unit rather than whatever is left.

When does train booking open for Diwali 2026

Indian Railways opens general quota booking 60 days before the journey date, excluding the travel day, at 8:00 AM. For Diwali week 2026 that means booking opens on 7 September for 6 November travel, 9 September for Lakshmi Puja on 8 November, and 11 September for Bhai Dooj on 10 November. Confirmed berths on popular metro routes clear within minutes, after which the options are Tatkal one day before departure or road travel.

Is it better to fly, take a train or drive for Diwali travel in India

It depends on the shape of the trip. Flying makes sense for a single long distance journey to one city, booked at least eight weeks ahead. Trains work if you can book at 8:00 AM on the day the 60 day window opens in September. Road travel in a caravan makes the most sense for a group moving between two or three places, because one booking covers the vehicle, the driver and the sleeping space with no quota, waitlist or per person fare.

Do I drive the caravan myself

No. Every BookMyCaravan booking is chauffeur driven, so a professional driver handles all of it. You choose the route, the destinations and the camping halts. The driver does not plan the itinerary, though they can often help arrange a halt if you have not pre booked one.

Does the caravan have power and air conditioning at a campsite

Most units carry an onboard genset, so overnight air conditioning, charging and lighting run at a halt with no external hookup. That is the main practical difference between caravan camping and tent camping in India. Running the generator is an excluded item on most fleets, billed by the hour on top of the nightly rate, and the rate varies by unit, so confirm it at quotation rather than assuming it is included.

Can I bring my dog on a Diwali caravan trip

Several caravans in the fleet take pets, though not every unit does and the terms differ, so confirm it for the specific caravan when you book. Some carry a cleaning deposit and at least one charges a pet supplement. Diwali week is one of the stronger arguments for taking a dog out of the city, since firework noise in urban areas is significantly harder on them than a quiet campsite is.
