Caravan Trips from Bangalore: Routes, Roads and Where to Go

The best caravan trips from Bangalore run west, into coffee country. Chikmagalur sits around 240 km out on NH75 through Nelamangala and Hassan. Coorg is around 260 km southwest, most of it on the Bangalore to Mysuru expressway. Sakleshpur is around 220 km on the same NH75 corridor, just before the ghats begin.

Wayanad is the Kerala crossing at around 275 km, through Bandipur. With more days, Hampi and Badami take you north into the Deccan, and the Gokarna and Karwar coast lies west across the Ghats.

How long you go for is your call. The same routes work over a weekend or stretch to four or five days.

What changes is the drive itself. Most trips leave in the morning, the way you would set off in your own car, except you are not driving. You have breakfast on the move while the city crawls to work, children sleep or play instead of counting down kilometres, and you arrive with the day still ahead.

And nothing ends at eleven in the morning, because there is no checkout.

Key Takeaways

  • The three strongest weekend routes all run west into coffee country: Sakleshpur at around 220 km, Chikmagalur at around 240 km, Coorg at around 260 km.
  • Wayanad at around 275 km is the Kerala crossing, and it wants three days rather than two.
  • With four days or more you can pair two coffee districts, run north to Hampi and Badami, or cross the Ghats to the Gokarna and Karwar coast.
  • The caravan is chauffeur driven and is not driven through the night, so plan around day drives.
  • Some places the caravan cannot reach: the Mullayanagiri summit road and the core zones of tiger reserves. You go up or in by local jeep or forest department vehicle.
  • October to March suits nearly everything here. Hampi and Badami run the opposite calendar and want December and January.

The Hours at Either End

Think about your last hotel weekend.

You arrived at two because that was check-in. You left at eleven on Sunday because that was checkout, then filled the hours before the drive home wandering a town you had already seen. Somewhere in there you packed twice.

A caravan removes both ends. You arrive when you arrive and the bed is already yours. On the last morning you leave when you feel like it, and if that means sitting outside with coffee until noon, no one is waiting for the room.

Over a two-day trip that is not a small difference. It is most of the trip. If this is your first time travelling this way, the how it works page covers the practical side, and a first-trip account covers the rest.

Chikmagalur

The road: around 240 km northwest on NH75 through Nelamangala, Hassan and Belur
Suits: first caravan trips, coffee estate mornings, anyone who wants high country
Less suited to: travellers set on driving to the Mullayanagiri summit themselves
Season: October to March

This is where coffee entered India. The Coffee Board of India dates the whole industry to seven seeds of Mocha planted by the saint Baba Budan in the courtyard of his hermitage in the Baba Budan Giri hills, around 1600. Which is why the entire district smells the way it does in flowering season.

Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in the state at 1,930 metres. One thing worth knowing before you plan around it: the Chikkamagaluru district administration is blunt about the approach, describing a road so narrow that two-way traffic is impossible, stating that driving to the peak is not possible at all, and noting that the last stretch is a climb on foot from partway up.

So the caravan stays down in the estates. You go up by local jeep or taxi, which is how everyone does it regardless of what they arrived in.

Hebbe Falls when the water is running, Bhadra reservoir for a slower day, Jhari Falls if you want the jeep track.

What stays with me here is the morning routine. Kettle going, door open onto rows of coffee, mist still low in the valley.

Coorg

The road: around 260 km southwest, mostly on the Bangalore to Mysuru expressway, then through Hunsur and Kushalnagar to Madikeri
Suits: families, first-timers, anyone who wants a short and easy drive
Less suited to: travellers who want somewhere without weekend crowds
Season: October to May

The easiest drive in the state, and the gentlest introduction to travelling this way.

Coorg spreads its highlights across a wide triangle. Madikeri and Abbey Falls in one corner, the Dubare elephant camp on the Cauvery in another, Kakkabe and the Tadiandamol climb in a third. Instead of returning to one base each evening, you move your bed between them.

The day-by-day version, including where caravans halt, is in the Bangalore to Coorg route guide, and there is a longer three-night coffee estate write-up if you want the full itinerary.

Sakleshpur

The road: around 220 km on NH75, before the highway drops into the ghats towards Mangaluru
Suits: repeat travellers, quiet weekends, monsoon greenery
Less suited to: trips built around big-name sights, because that is not what is here
Season: October to March, or the monsoon if you go deliberately

Save this one for after Coorg and Chikmagalur. Same coffee, same mist, a fraction of the people, plus the old railway trail and the ghat views.

On a long weekend when the other two are full, this is where I go.

Wayanad

The road: around 275 km through Mysuru and Gundlupet, then NH766 across Bandipur into Kerala
Suits: three days or more, forest and border-crossing trips
Less suited to: a tight two-day weekend, given the distance and the crossing
Season: October to March

The forest changes character the moment you cross. Edakkal caves, Banasura Sagar, tea and spice country.

One rule governs this route. Traffic through the Bandipur stretch of NH766 is restricted between 9 pm and 6 am, a night closure in force since 2009 to cut wildlife deaths on the highway. Travellers get caught at the gate by it every season.

It does not normally affect a caravan trip, because the caravan is not driven through the night anyway. It is worth knowing all the same, because it shapes when you should start.

With More Days

Coorg and Chikmagalur, Four to Five Days

The two coffee districts back to back, roughly three hours apart. Nothing to pack in the middle, so the second district begins the moment you arrive.

Hampi and Badami, Four to Five Days

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 4,187 hectares in the Tungabhadra basin, with more than 1,600 surviving remains scattered across it. Pattadakal, near Badami, is separately inscribed for its nine Hindu temples and a Jain sanctuary, built under the Chalukyas.

Both are places where the ruins sprawl and shade is scarce, which is exactly when having your own base parked nearby changes the day. December and January are the months.

BR Hills and Mysuru, Four Days

Safari mornings paired with palace evenings. The caravan halts outside the reserve and you enter on a forest department vehicle, which is the rule at every tiger reserve in India.

Gokarna and Karwar, Six to Seven Days

The Uttara Kannada coast, roughly 500 km west, crossing the Ghats on both legs. Coastal Regulation Zone rules restrict what can happen close to the high tide line, so coastal halts sit back from the shore rather than on it. The wider picture of where caravans actually park overnight in India is worth reading before a long coastal run.

Season, Honestly

October to March suits nearly everything here, and October into November is the sweet spot for the Ghats. The waterfalls are still running from the monsoon and the roads have dried out.

June to September is a different trip. Coorg and Sakleshpur in the rain are beautiful and I would not talk anyone out of it, but ghat visibility drops and some estate approaches soften. Go for the monsoon deliberately, not by accident.

Hampi and Badami run the opposite calendar. Cool and clear in December and January, hard work from March onwards. If you are planning around the heat rather than the rain, the summer routes guide covers where to go instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best caravan trips from Bangalore?

Chikmagalur, Coorg and Sakleshpur are the strongest routes, all between 220 and 260 km west of the city in coffee country. Wayanad at around 275 km is the Kerala crossing. With four days or more, Coorg with Chikmagalur, BR Hills with Mysuru, and Hampi with Badami all open up, and a longer trip reaches the Gokarna and Karwar coast.

How many days do I need for a caravan trip from Bangalore?

As many as you want. Chikmagalur, Coorg and Sakleshpur all work over a weekend and stretch comfortably to three or four days. Wayanad is better with three days or more, and the multi-district circuits need four or five. You set the length when you book.

What time does the caravan reach me?

You agree the pickup time when you book, and most trips out of Bangalore start in the morning on the day you leave. An early departure clears the Outer Ring Road before it fills and means you arrive with most of the day still ahead.

Do caravans travel overnight?

No. The caravan is not driven through the night. Journeys are planned as day drives, which is safer on ghat roads and means the drive is part of the trip. It also keeps you clear of restrictions like the Bandipur night closure on the Wayanad route.

Can a caravan drive up to Mullayanagiri?

No, and neither can most vehicles. The Chikkamagaluru district administration states that driving to the peak is not possible, that the road is too narrow for two-way traffic, and that the last stretch is a climb on foot from partway up. The caravan stays in the Chikmagalur estates and you go up by local jeep or taxi.

Is there a night traffic restriction on the Wayanad route?

Yes. Traffic through the Bandipur stretch of NH766 is restricted between 9 pm and 6 am to reduce wildlife deaths on the highway. Because the caravan is not driven through the night, this does not normally affect the trip, but it is the reason the Wayanad leg should start early.

Can a caravan enter Bandipur or BR Hills?

Not the core zones. Tiger reserves admit only registered safari vehicles with permits, so the caravan halts outside and you join a forest department safari from there.

Which is better for a first caravan trip, Coorg or Chikmagalur?

Coorg for the easiest drive and the most established route. Chikmagalur for higher country and better early mornings. Either works over a weekend.

Do I plan the route and the stops myself?

Yes. You choose the route, the pace and where you spend each night. The chauffeur drives the caravan. If a night halt is not already booked, we help arrange one through him.

Is a caravan trip from Bangalore good with young children?

It is one of the formats that improves with children on board. The beds and the washroom travel with you, naps happen on the move, and there is no check-in time to work around. Coorg is the gentlest first trip. There is a fuller family planning guide if you are travelling with small children.

Where does the caravan reach me in Bangalore?

At your address, including Whitefield, Electronic City, Koramangala and Hebbal, so you are not crossing the city before the trip has started. Details are on the Bangalore page.

How far ahead should I book?

Three to four weeks for long weekends and for the October to November window, when the coffee districts fill up. Ordinary off-peak weekends are more flexible. The step-by-step booking guide walks through the whole process.

Final Thoughts

Bangalore is unusually well placed for this. Three coffee districts inside 260 km, a forest crossing at 275, and two of the country’s great heritage sites within a long weekend’s reach north. Very few Indian cities give you that much range in that many directions.

The choice is really about how far you want the drive to take you rather than which place is best. A weekend points you west. Four days opens the Deccan. A week reaches the sea.

Pick the direction and decide the length yourself. Verified caravans and operators for these routes are on BookMyCaravan Bangalore, with the rest of the state in the Karnataka guide, and the whole lineup on our fleet page. Anything not covered here is probably in the FAQ.
