Why Gujarat is India’s Most Underrated Caravan Destination

Gujarat is the caravan travel destination that most Indian travelers have not discovered yet, and that is precisely what makes it so worth going now.

While Maharashtra and Goa attract the majority of caravan bookings, Gujarat offers experiences that are fundamentally unavailable anywhere else in the country. Not variations of experiences you can find elsewhere. Genuinely unique ones.

The Rann of Kutch is the largest salt desert in the world and one of the most extraordinary landscapes on the planet. The experience of parking a caravan on the edge of the white Rann at sunset, watching the horizon turn amber, and spending the night in complete silence under a sky undiluted by light pollution is simply not replicable anywhere else in India. No hotel in or near the Rann delivers anything close to what a caravan does here.

Gir National Park is the only place in the world outside Africa where you can see lions in the wild. The Asiatic lion population here has recovered to over 600 animals and sightings on morning jeep safaris are reliable. Using a caravan as your base outside the park boundary, rather than an overpriced safari lodge, gives you complete privacy between safaris, your own kitchen, and the freedom to spend more than one day at the park without the lodge checkout pressure.

The Saurashtra coast connecting Somnath, Diu, Porbandar, Dwarka, and Okha is one of India’s most ancient and historically layered travel routes. This is the coastline of the Mahabharata, of Gandhi’s birthplace, of the westernmost point of India, and of temples that have been rebuilt on the same sacred ground for thousands of years. In a caravan you travel this route at your own pace, stopping at deserted beaches between pilgrimage towns that no tour operator puts on an itinerary.

Ahmedabad is India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City and the logical base and start point for most Gujarat caravan itineraries. The old city’s heritage streets, the Sabarmati Ashram, the step-wells of Adalaj and Rani ki Vav at Patan, and the textile and craft markets are all within a half-day drive of each other. Gujarat rewards travelers who take the road. A caravan is the only way to access the best of it on your own terms.

When to Plan Your Gujarat Caravan Trip

Gujarat has more seasonal variation than most caravan destinations. The right travel window depends entirely on which routes you want to cover.

Rann Utsav Season

October, March

Peak season. Rann Utsav active. Gir open. All Saurashtra routes comfortable. Full moon Purnima nights in the Rann are exceptional, book 6 to 10 weeks ahead for these dates.

Best for Saputara

July, September

Monsoon. Gira Waterfalls at Waghai are spectacular. Dang Forest has thick sal and teak canopy. Not suitable for Rann routes. Excellent for Saputara and hill station travel.

Shoulder Season

March, May

Rann Utsav ends. Gir still open until June 15. Temperatures rising across Gujarat. Ahmedabad heritage routes viable early morning. Avoid afternoon driving in peak summer.

Gir Closed

June 16 – Oct 15

Gir National Park closed for monsoon and lion breeding. Rann unvisitable (flooded). Ahmedabad and Saputara remain options. Most Gujarat caravan operators pause operations.

Rann Utsav Dates and Full Moon Nights

Rann Utsav runs approximately November to February each year with exact dates varying by Gujarat Tourism calendar. The most in-demand dates are the Purnima (full moon) nights when the white salt desert under moonlight is at its most extraordinary. These nights book out months in advance. If your travel dates are flexible, plan your trip around a Purnima night and book immediately.

Practical Information for Gujarat Caravan Travel

Gujarat is a significantly larger state than Maharashtra in terms of caravan travel distances. Here is everything you need to know before your trip.

🛣️Roads and Distances

Gujarat’s national highways and expressways are excellent, NH947, NH48, and the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway are all caravan-friendly and well-maintained. Key distances: Ahmedabad to Bhuj is 340 km, Bhuj to Sasan Gir via Rajkot is 350 km, Sasan Gir to Dwarka is 230 km. A comprehensive Gujarat itinerary requires a minimum of 6 to 8 nights to cover multiple regions without rushing. State roads in Kutch and Saurashtra are good quality with occasional rough patches on smaller village roads.

📋Rann of Kutch Entry Permit

Entry to the Rann of Kutch area requires a permit from the Gujarat tourism checkpoint at Dhordo. The permit is straightforward, a nominal fee currently around Rs 100 per person, and can be arranged at the checkpoint on arrival. Your BookMyCaravan operator will handle the permit process as part of your itinerary. There is no advance online booking requirement for the standard Rann entry permit though procedures can change during Rann Utsav dates.

🦁Gir National Park Safari Booking

Jeep safaris inside Gir National Park must be booked separately through the Gujarat Forest Department’s official online portal at girlion.in. Safari slots are limited and highly sought after during the peak November to February season. Book safari slots at least 2 to 4 weeks ahead of your visit. Your caravan operator cannot book these for you, this must be done directly through the official government portal. Morning safaris offer the best lion sighting probability.

🌙Overnight Parking

BookMyCaravan’s verified Gujarat operators have established overnight parking arrangements across all five route areas. In the Rann, designated parking areas near Dhordo handle caravan stops during Rann Utsav season. Near Gir, operators use pre-arranged private land in the Sasan Gir buffer zone. Along the Saurashtra coast, beach-adjacent private land stops are used between Somnath and Dwarka. In Ahmedabad, secure private compound parking near the heritage district is available through operator arrangements.

📶Mobile Connectivity

Jio and Airtel 4G coverage is excellent in Ahmedabad, Bhuj, Rajkot, Junagadh, and all major towns. Coverage on highways between these cities is reliable. The Rann of Kutch beyond Dhordo has patchy connectivity, Jio works in the Dhordo camp area but signal drops in the open Rann. Download offline maps for Kutch before departure. Saputara and deep Dang Forest areas have limited connectivity on some stretches.

🍽️Food and Supplies

Gujarat is India’s largest vegetarian state and food options along caravan routes reflect this. The state has excellent Gujarati thali restaurants in all major towns at very reasonable prices. Dhokla, thepla, fafda, and handvo are excellent travel foods available from local vendors. For non-vegetarian travelers, options are limited in many parts of Gujarat, particularly in smaller towns and pilgrimage areas like Dwarka and Somnath. Stock your caravan kitchen with essentials before entering rural Kutch or Saurashtra.

Gujarat Caravan Travel, Common Questions

Every question here is specific to caravan travel in Gujarat. For general caravan rental questions, visit our FAQ page.

Can I take a caravan to the Rann of Kutch during Rann Utsav, and how far in advance should I book?

Yes. The Rann of Kutch is one of BookMyCaravan’s most requested Gujarat destinations and caravan travel during Rann Utsav (October to March) is fully supported through our verified Gujarat operators. Demand during Rann Utsav is exceptionally high, particularly around full moon Purnima nights when the white salt desert under moonlight is at its most extraordinary. Booking 6 to 10 weeks in advance is strongly recommended for any Rann travel between November and February. Last-minute availability during peak Utsav and Purnima dates is very limited. Check live availability on BookMyCaravan and confirm as soon as your dates are decided.

Is it possible to do a caravan safari inside Gir National Park in Gujarat?

Caravans cannot enter inside Gir National Park’s core zone, safari vehicles for lion spotting are separate jeeps booked through the Gujarat Forest Department’s online portal at girlion.in. However, caravan travel to the Gir region is an excellent base experience. Your caravan serves as accommodation in the Sasan Gir buffer area outside the park boundary, and you take separately booked jeep safaris into the park for lion sightings. This is a more comfortable and flexible experience than staying in a lodge, you have complete privacy between safari sessions, your own kitchen for early morning chai before the 6am safari, and no resort checkout pressure if you want to stay an extra day.

What is the road condition on the Ahmedabad to Rann of Kutch route for a caravan?

The Ahmedabad to Bhuj route (approximately 340 km) runs on the NH947, a well-maintained four-lane national highway suitable for all caravan types. Journey time is approximately 5 to 6 hours at a comfortable caravan pace with stops. The Bhuj to Dhordo stretch (approximately 85 km) is on a good state highway through the Kutch landscape. The Rann itself is a flat salt plain, caravans park at designated areas near Dhordo village. There are no steep gradients, no narrow mountain roads, and no technically challenging sections on this entire route. It is one of the most straightforward long-distance caravan drives in India.

How is a caravan trip through the Saurashtra coast different from a regular pilgrimage tour?

The Saurashtra coastal route connecting Somnath, Diu, Veraval, Porbandar, Dwarka, and Okha is one of India’s most ancient pilgrimage circuits. Most travelers do this by bus or hired car, staying in pilgrimage guesthouses at each stop. A caravan changes the experience entirely. You travel between these sacred sites at your own pace, stop at the deserted beaches of Madhavpur, Bileshwar, and Chorwad along the Saurashtra coast that pilgrim routes bypass entirely, and have the privacy and comfort of your own space at each destination rather than shared pilgrimage dormitories. The route is approximately 450 km from Somnath to Dwarka and best experienced over 4 to 5 nights, a pace no bus tour itinerary allows.

What makes Saputara different from other hill station caravan destinations in Gujarat?

Saputara is Gujarat’s only hill station and sits at 875 metres in the Dang district on the Maharashtra border in the southern Sahyadri range. Unlike the busier hill stations of Maharashtra or Himachal, Saputara is compact, genuinely uncrowded, and surrounded by the dense Dang Forest, home to tribal communities with a distinct culture and craft tradition that most Gujarat travelers never encounter. A caravan trip to Saputara typically combines the hill station itself with drives through Dang tribal villages, the Purna Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Gira Waterfalls near Waghai, spectacular July to September when the falls are in full flow. The route from Ahmedabad is approximately 250 km via Surat.

Is Dholavira worth including on a Rann of Kutch caravan route, and is it accessible?

Dholavira, the UNESCO World Heritage Harappan archaeological site on Khadir Island, is genuinely one of the most extraordinary and under-visited places in India and is strongly recommended as an addition to any Rann of Kutch caravan itinerary. The site is accessible by caravan via a good causeway road from Bhuj, approximately 230 km through the striking landscape of the Little Rann and its flamingo wetlands. It is one of the largest Indus Valley Civilisation sites in the world. Adding it requires approximately one additional day and extends the total trip from 3 nights to 4 nights minimum. The site entry fee is Rs 35 per person for Indian nationals.

Can a single Gujarat caravan trip cover both the Rann of Kutch and Gir Forest?

Yes, combining the Rann of Kutch and Gir Forest on one Gujarat caravan itinerary is entirely feasible and is one of BookMyCaravan’s most popular Gujarat circuits. The distance from Bhuj near the Rann to Sasan Gir is approximately 350 km via Rajkot, a comfortable one-day caravan drive. A typical combined itinerary runs Ahmedabad to Rann of Kutch for 2 to 3 nights, then drives to Gir and Somnath for 2 nights, with an optional extension along the Saurashtra coast to Dwarka for a further 2 nights. The complete Gujarat caravan circuit covering Rann, Gir, Somnath, and Dwarka is best done over 7 to 8 nights to avoid feeling rushed between these genuinely significant destinations.
